WHAT they were not able to do in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation did in the University Games as its beach volleyball tandem claimed the title yesterday in Iloilo City.

USPF failed to showcase their expertise in the indoor volleyball competition after a controversy-filled semifinal that saw them ditching their match.

Sun.Star accepts donations for victims of Typhoon Ondoy

They got a chance to redeem themselves behind the gallant efforts of new beach volleyball tandem Edward Ybañez and John Rey Opone, who trounced powerhouse Foundation University (FU) in the finals, 21-17, 21-14.

The high-flying FU squad was the regional champion of the Nestea Beach Volleyball competition held in Cebu last summer.

USPF almost did not make it to the finals when it dropped a set over Far Eastern University in the semifinals. USPF lost in the opening set, 21-17, but made up for it with a long second set, 25-23. FEU lost steam to hand over the third set, 15-6.

“Maayo nalang nahutdan ug hangin ang FEU pag third,” said USPF coach Cecil Jotojot.

Meanwhile, the University of San Jose Recoletos failed to complete its title bid in the men’s volleyball competition as it bowed to Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines champions University of Sto. Tomas, 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21.

“Size-wise, we are inferior. UST players’s height average is at least six feet. I only have Ken (Abunda) and (Jessriel) Pino to counter that,” said USJ-R coach Grace Antigua.

The University of San Carlos’s Niña Cortes and Methosheena Bate finished fourth in the women’s beach volleyball competition after losing to Ateneo de Manila, 21-13, 21-15, in the battle for third place.

WNU gains final berth
in UniGames football
BY NIDA BUENAFE

West Negros University XI blanked University of the Philippines , 3-0, to secure the first final seat in men's football of the 14 th National University Games yesterday at the Central Philippine University football pitch.

The Wesnecans, last year's runner-up, will face the winner in the semifinals match between University of St. La Salle and St. Benilde.

In women's football, defending champion De La Salle booked the first final seat with a 4-2 penalty shootout win over UP.

Meanwhile, battle for supremacy in swimming saw San Beda and UP tankers dominating most of the events with Sea Lions' John Orlan Simora and Ferdinand Frigillana figuring prominently in the winner's list.

Simora and Frigillana captured five gold medals each as San Beda ruled all but one of the 16 events in the competition.

Simora made his mark in 100m and 200m breaststroke and 200m medley, while Frigillana lorded the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle races. The two San Beda swimmers added two more gold medals to the haul in the relay events.

In women's swimming, UP's Lady Maroons swept all events as Carla Grabador and Claire Adorna delivered impressive performances to pull away from their closest pursuers.

Grabador, the meet's top swimmer, copped four individual golds and two relay titles while Adorna earned the gold in three events.

The Manila-based schools also stamped their class in other disciplines with St. Benilde Blazers sweeping the men and women's lawn tennis events and taking the plum in women's table tennis. The Blazers earlier hoisted the championship trophy in men's chess.

Gold medal in men's table tennis and women's chess went to Far Eastern University while University of the East dealt Iloilo Doctors College a heartbreaking loss in men's badminton

The IDC lady shuttlers avenged the loss by turning back St. Benilde in women's badminton finals.

Earlier, Rizal Technological University copped the men's athletics title, while UST reigned in the distaff side.

Ateneo stayed on track of its title-retention bid in basketball with a 95-46 whipping of Holy Cross of Davao to arrange a semifinal showdown with the FEU Tamaraws, who booted out Emilio Aguinaldo College, 88-67.

Clashing in the other semifinal duel are St. Francis of Assisi College and University of Iloilo .

In volleyball, USLS men's team bowed to defending champion University of Sto . Tomas in four sets, 26-28, 25-13, 25-14, 25-11 to kiss their bid for the championship goodbye while University of San Jose-Recoletos of Cebu advanced to the finals by beating IDC, 29-27, 31-29, 25-16.

Women's defending champion USLS also failed to keep their title-retention bid going as they yielded to sister school De La Salle-Manila in three straight sets, 17-25, 15-25, 18-25.*NAB

Unigames side trips at CPU

The last day of the Unigames is come today with football, volleyball, basketball and beach volleyball championships. Contenders hug the limelight as they summon their full strength and determination to win the coveted prize.

Other contingents have gone home having been eliminated. Many athletes remain to cheer on their team mates for the moment of truth. Who are the champions? Playing in the Unigames is enough to make one feel like a champion.

To celebrate the week long Unigames experience at CPU, one must reward his or herself. One can get pleasure and treasures through the merchandise and souvernirs displayed at the host's place. Athletes should not miss a walk through the CPU halfmoon drive to enjoy the remaining moments with fellow participants and new found friends. They could relax and watch CPUTV where game are replays at the CPU Promenade. They should also find time to go downtown or to the malls, then find a seat in a restaurant and enjoy Iloilo's famous Lapaz batchoy.

There's no difficulty in hunting for souvenirs, pasalubong, and Iloilo delicacies that athletes wanted to bring home. The bazaar at the halfmoon drive offers a variety of these items. On sale at the kiosks are native souvenirs, food outlets selling Ilonggo specialties. Some enterprising folks offer free tasting of freshly baked Piaya and Barquillos, two famous Ilonggo delicacies. A stall offer T-shirt printing on the spot and a couple of creative guys sell necklace made from exotic materials.

After all, the UNIGAMES like any national event, is a chance to appreciate and enjoy what the host school has prepared. We hope that all the delegates enjoyed their stay in CPU and in Iloilo City.

WNU wins UniGames
men’s football crown
BY NIDA BUENAFE

West Negros University reasserted its supremacy in men’s football yesterday, blanking St. Benilde College, 2-0, to take home the championship in the 14th National University Games at the Central Philippine University pitch in Iloilo City.

Though having a hard time making the necessary adjustment to turn back the aggressive attacks from the CSB side, the Wesnecans, mentored by former national coach and RP campaigner Norman Fegidero, found their rhythm in the second half and connected the first goal in 50th minute courtesy of Joven Bedic. Seven minutes after, Ruffy Llorente sent a free kick directly to the goal’s mouth to seal the win.

In women’s football, University of Sto. Tomas claimed the crown by beating De La Salle University, while University of the Philippines settled for second runner-up honors by prevailing over University of San Carlos, 5-0, at the Sta. Barbara town football ground.

The women’s football title capped UST’s crowning glory after plucking the men and women’s volleyball championship.

UST men’s volleyball squad defeated University of San Jose Recoletos of Cebu in four sets, 25-14, 25-12, 23-25, 25-21, while their women’s counterpart stamped their class on De La Salle-Manila in three straight sets, 25-11, 25-23, 25-18.

This 14th UniGames, which ended yesterday, drew participation from 21 teams in men’s division and 22 in women’s side.*NAB
