Dear Juaning
Dear Pastor Jonan
Dear Pearl Londres ....

Great news!  Today I received a check (her 5th!) from Mrs. Clara John for $15,000!  That makes the total of her donations to $55,000 for the CPU Lifestyle Learning Center.  Perhaps we can allocate that amount for the start-up exercise machines for the Center.  My suggestion is to purchase the machines there so you can have the benefit of local installation, maintenance, etc.  Shipping equipment from the US is so prohibitive!  Cynthia Gencianeo could give you suggestions as to the choice of equipment.  I had talked with her before about needing her help and expertise before.

I talked today with Emily Fries, VP for Development and Communications at the United Board and got instructions for the check.  It will be forwarded to CPU soon.  VP Fries said she would write an acknowledgment letter and thanks to Mrs. John.  Mrs. John is 98 years old! but still has all her faculties.  She is still an active member of the Midwest Bible Church in Chicago. She hosted Rev. Greg Tingson during his visits here years ago.

At this point, I suggest that a Facility Coordinator  be selected, preferably someone familiar with health and fitness, one who can provide direction not only for functions of the Center but also programming, and also selection of staff so that when Grand Opening comes around the facility will be ready to operate completely, in coordination with Dr. Alma Frondoza whose students will be involved with the Center.  A fully functional Lifestyle Center will be a big boost to the University!

Please give me your thoughts and reactions.

CONDOLENCE TO SULPICO FAMILY

Nestor Sulpico, a Centralian (CPUDHS), hailed as "New York's most honest taxi driver" passed away last April 24, 2008. He was suffering from cancer of the colon.

On July 15, 2004, he found a backpack that contained $75,000.00 worth of black pearls left in his taxi. Without hesitation, since as he later testified, "I was raised to be honest," he found ways to contact the hedge-fund manager who was the owner of the valuable pearls. Explaining his decision to return the valuables, he further said, "I believe that honesty is the most important virtue which serves as a foundation of all other virtues."

In grateful appreciation, the executive raised the amount of $5,000.00 to help Sulpico finished his nursing studies. The mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, gave him an "integrity award" and a symbolic key to they city. He was also invited by Ophrah Winfrey to guest in her show.

Let us pray for the family of Nestor in this time of bereavement and grief. He was laid to rest at the Iloilo Memorial Park last Saturday but then we continue to hope that his ideals and principles will continue to live on. He was indeed a true Centralian.

May God continually bless us all!

Sincerely,

Rinand Caipang Escuban
Director

CPU athletes excel in 2008 Nat’l PRISAA

05 May 2008
Joining the Western Visayas PRISAA delegation to the 2008 National PRISAA games in Zamboanga City on 7-13 April 2008, CPU athletes garnered awards in their respective events.
Mark Jossel Mariano took the gold medal in chess. Sepaktakraw team settled for silver medal; and the Softball Women got the bronze.
There are five CPU students who are with the Sepaktakraw team. They are Dennis Alla, Hajie Rotes Anzures, Marlou Cacho, Leonardo Lumawag and Rufino Tolosa. Since the first day of their engagements, the Sepaktakraw team was on a winning streak until they encountered the Region 11 ( Davao ) team, last year’s champion. Defeating Region 7 ( Cebu ) team to gain the berth in the championship match with Region 11, the Region VI team settled for the silver medal. Mrs. Neiluz Gardose coaches the Sepak Takraw team.
Except for one player, the Softball Women Team is composed of players from CPU. The Softball Women Team was assembled in mid-January 2008 when CPU responded to the call of Western Visayas PRISAA that a softball team had to be fielded in the national games. On April 9, going against Region 10 and Region 5, the CPU nine proved tough; the two victories earned them a chance for a crossover game against National Capital Region (UST) team despite a loss against Region II. The scorching summer heat did not deter the CPU Softball Women Team to defeat via regulation Region 12 (Gen. Santos City) to earn the bronze medal. It was 30 years ago when CPU had sent a softball women team to the national games.
Pastor Kim de la Cruz took the challenge to train and coach the team that was composed of selected softball players from among our college players. They were: Maricar Caballero, Rosevic Capunihan, April Caumban, Charmie Gevero, Mayette Japitana, Grace Longno, Rubielyn Mendoza, Rhea Paderna, Sweden Ricato, Fatima Ricraprente, Antonette Sacamay, and Kristie Salvalosa. Jane Marquez was the lone non-CPU player who pitched for our team. Mrs. Perlita Kilayko and Mr. Abilardo Carman were the assistant coach and trainer, respectivley.
Pastor Jonan Castillon went with the CPU delegation to provide photo and video documentation. Alumnus and former VP for Administration Engr. Walden Rio also attended the national PRISAA games as the Western Visayas PRISAA team consultant. Mr. Lemuel Gardose was one of the coordinators of the Western Visayas delegation.
For his involvement in Sepaktakraw, Mr. Lemuel Gardose was appointed as Commissioner for Visayas by the Philippine Amateur Sepaktakraw Association from 2008 to 2012. His appointment was given during the Sepaktakraw awarding ceremonies. The Centralian Sports Association, through the leadership of Atty. Alejandro Somo supported CPU’s delegation. The softball team availed of softball equipment and other logistics through the Brana-de la Cruz Outreach Ministry.

2 Iloilo journalists to attend 2008 Global Grand Reunion in Las Vegas
Iloilo journalists Jonavin V. Villalva and Alex P. Vidal have been invited to attend the 5th Global Grand Reunion of the Central Philippine University at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 29-July 3, 2008.

In a communication from http://www.cpufoaa.org/, CPUFOAA president Perla Guillergan Londres wrote: "Come and join in the fun, fellowship and camaraderie with 'old' and new friends. Come to relive treasured school day memories and make new ones."

Villalva and Vidal are scheduled to cover the World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight championship fight between Manny Pacquiao and David Diaz at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on June 28 also in Las Vegas.

"After the Pacquiao fight, we will honor the invitation and be part of the global reunion," said the 39-year old Villalva of MBC Aksyon Radyo Iloilo.

Texas-based photojournalis t Rufino "Pinoy" Gonzales, editor-in-chief of the Philippines News Service (PNS) the global Filipino wired news network, earlier informed Vidal, who studied psychology at CPU in 1998, that they would be accommodated.

"Come to show your support for the school that provided excellent education and training. Come because you believe in what Reunions are all about -- bridging the separation brought about by time and distance, so that we can once again celebrate as one body, our Central Spirit," added Londres' invitation.

"I thank God that we are able to make the 5th Global Reunion a reality in Las Vegas, NV, USA on June 29-July 3, 2008. Your presence is vital to the success of this endeavor. Please send your registration early to avail of special pricing in both registration and lodging. Invite your friends and family to join you -- the more, the merrier.

"Our theme, in conjunction with the CPUAAI's motto, is "CPU Heritage: Our Pride."

Even as we remember our past, let us look with anticipation and joy to the years to come; more importantly, let us appreciate the blessings we enjoy today, and make special moments with those whose lives are entwined with ours, through our common heritage and God's love.

"I look forward to seeing you next June. It will make my day!"

Gonzales, an active Centralian, said big names from Iloilo's most respected university are also expected to attend the global reunion.

HUMAN INTERESTS
By LUCELL LARAWAN

Academe-industry linkage:
the CPU experience, 1

MY study funded by the University Research Center of the Central Philippine University showed existent forms of linkages by the university and the business sector, one of which is consultation by the faculty.

Some faculty members from different colleges are consultants of firms that tap their services. In the College of Business and Accountancy, practically all accountancy and some management teachers were hired as consultants.

For instance, five teachers monitored the bamboo industry in Maasin, Iloilo. Last October 2005, there was a review of accounting and all records of an organization. Also on one occasion, a management faculty was a technical consultant of a school feasibility study.

In the College of Agriculture, most faculty members act as consultants in their area of specialization, although some consultancies are more extensive than others. The services offered by this college are not purely for business firms but also for non-government organizations (NGOs) and government institutions.

Consultations by some engineering faculty are also common. An estimated 80 percent of the faculty in the college is involved in either consultation services or outreach activities.
In the university alone, infrastructure projects and rewiring activities are mostly done by faculty engineers. In 1997, the faculty engineers evaluated 80 Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Science Laboratory buildings nationwide.

A faculty in the Life Sciences Department of the university is involved in environmental concerns. This may not strictly qualify in purely industrial concerns, but environmental issues are vital in the business sector. Therefore, they are seen as indirectly relevant.

Faculty members in the medical field regularly serve as consultants in hospitals. Most of the medical doctors in the College of Medicine, except two, have regular clinic hours while teaching in the university.

In the College of Nursing, the type of service offered by the faculty members is different. One is the review service for nursing review centers. Having some profit involved, the review centers can still be part of the industrial concern.

One major indication that the university’s links with the industry sector has grown stronger was the signing of a memorandum of agreement between the University Research Center (URC) and the Iloilo Chamber of Commerce last December 2003. The agreement was about URC’s role as consultant, researcher or trainer for the Iloilo Chamber of Commerce.

The first projects done by CPU through URC, as a result of this partnership, were the computer literacy program and the website installation.

A consultation workshop on improved cookstoves for institutional and small industries was held on October 2003. Prof. Alexis Belonio was the presentor. This kind of activity reflects the university’s competence in technological innovations, especially in the field of agriculture.

The University Guidance Services Center is offering psychological tests for job applicants in business firms outside CPU. This specialized service has been going on for years now.

In colleges where graduates usually work in business firms, teachers usually get involved with the industry through consultation services for a fee. However, in courses which are more involved in NGOs and the government sector such as Social Work and the social sciences, teachers are not usually hired as consultants in industry-related activities.

Factors such as experience and track record as consultants, as well as one’s willingness and ability to network are very important determinants of a teacher’s marketability in consultation services for the industry sector.

All accountancy teachers have become quite marketable, having served as accounting consultants. The demand for accountants or their competence in the field is a predictor to the marketability of their consultation services to business firms. Another possibility may be the nature of the need; some firms prefer to outsource accounting and auditing services. When auditing is concerned, some firms may prefer external auditor’s services.

The fact that faculty accountants have been frequently hired as consultants is a good sign that what is taught in the academe in this particular field is not far from the one practiced in the firms. This can also mean that these teachers have become competitive not only in teaching but also in practice.

In the area of agriculture and engineering courses, the fact that some faculty members have been involved in consultation services more extensively than the others means that the marketability of the teachers vary.

One thing to note is that in a society that is partly agricultural, the demand for consultants is always present. There is a lot to be done to make our communities’ agricultural practices at par with advanced economies.

The field of agriculture focuses not only in the business aspect but also in terms of involvement with NGOs and government agencies./PN
