Office for External Affairs and Public Relations
Central Philippine University

Letter from Central

Dear Centralians and Friends,

Greetings from the campus!

We have great news for you. The AUTONOMOUS status of Central Philippine University has been extended by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) effective November 15, 2007. This is in recognition of CPU's adherence to quality education and public responsibility and accountability as a higher education provider. CPU shares this autonomous status with only 22 other higher education institutions (HEIs) all over the country out of about 1200 private schools. We are even prouder that our beloved Alma Mater is one of the only two schools in Western Visayas accorded with such a prestigious honor.

Next week, December 20 to be exact, we will be holding three important events. First is the 64th Commemoration of the Hopevale Martyrdom of American Missionaries. This will be held at the replica of the Cathedral in the Glen, at the back of the Wall of Remembrance, 3:30 p.m. Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico, Vice President for Administration, will give scriptural reflection while Dr. Elma S. Herradura will share historical tidbits about the tragic event that happened last December 20, 1943 in Tapaz, Capiz. The CPU Handbell choir will provide the music to maintain the solemnity of the celebration.

The second important event is the formal turn-over of the Coaster donated by Mr. Jose U. Santos and Dr. Carmen Pama-Santos. This celebration will be held at the Educational Media Center, 5:00 p.m. It can be remembered that this coaster, which can accommodate 28 persons, was joyously dedicated last June 22, 2007 at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park. This celebration will also announce the Endowment Fund established by the Santos family in honor of Santos Chiu Kim She, the father of Mr. Jose U. Santos, who was philanthropist and civic leader. According to Prof. Felix B. Regalado, Santos Chiu Kim She is a "Profile in courage, in hard work, in dedicated service to the community." Santos was also described by Arturo Samonte, President of the Iloilo Press and Radio Club 1959-1960 as a "Nationalist, Civic Leader, Benefactor of the Poor, and Crusader against Communism" In short, the Santos Chiu Kim She story is a story of "A Lifetime of Service." His name says it all – he was a Saint, a Santos.

The third event is the Grand Finals of the Kantahan sa Central – the nightly videoke contest that started last December 7. It is being hosted every night by a famous Comedian and TV Host who is also a Centralian, Mr. Diego Mambo. He is accompanied by Ms. Dyna Madalag and Mrs. Suzette Gonzales. The Grand Finals will feature 32 contestants coming from three categories – children, adult and senior citizen. To those of you who haven't visited CPU since the switching-on of lights and the start of the Kantahan, now is the time to bring your family at the campus, sit down in the big field, buy some inasal, listen to the music, be dazzled by the lights and enjoy the festivity.

On January 6, 2008, 3:00 p.m., at the University Church, CPU, the Kabayao Family – the internationall y-acclaimed violinist and pianist (Gilopez & Corazon) together with their children Sicilienne, Gilberto and Farida will hold a concert. The purpose of this musical event is to raise funds for the building project of the Convention Baptist Ministers' Association (CBMA). This building is called the Katipan Hall (Covenant Hall) and is situated at the Camp Higher Ground, Barotac Viejo, Iloilo. The pastors are praying to raise P300,000 so that the hall can be completed. The initial funds came from the CBMA members contributions and donations from generous individuals, organizations, institutions and member churches of the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches. Since then the design has been improved into a permanent structure so that it can be used by the general public. The Katipan Hall can accommodate 1,000 persons. The pastors started holding their annual CBMA assembly at the Camp Higher Ground last January 2006 and January 2007 in order to reclaim the heritage of the Camp as an icon of serenity, spirituality and renewal. (Many of us have been witnesses to life-changing experiences and deepening of one's spirituality that take place at Camp Higher Ground).

The same concert will also be held at Cosmopolitan Evangelical Church, Malaspina St., Bacolod City on January 13. The CBMA is blessed to get the commitment of the Kabayao Family for this cause. Let us help our pastors in this noble endeavor of raising funds for the completion of the Katipan Hall. If you wish to donate, become a sponsor or contribute to this cause, please email us and we will facilitate your communication to the CBMA.

The CBMA is the association of pastors of the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches. CPU owes its birth to the ministry of American Baptist missionaries and Philippine Baptist pastors. Thus, until now this birthright is etched in the Constitution and By-laws of CPU: 33 out of 65 members of CPU Corporation and at least 10 Board of Trustees should come from member churches of the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches.

In closing, we would like to share with you the words of Rev. Benjamin Chan of the International Ministries, American Baptist Churches, delivered last May 25, 2005: "Hopevale is more than a story. It is the extended chapter of the Acts of Apostles written in the land of Philippines. Hopevale is more than the name of a place. It is the Holy Ground made known by the tears and blood of Filipino and American Baptists. Hopevale is more than a memory. It is a symbol of our friendship and solidarity in Jesus Christ."

May God bless us all.

Respectfully,

Celebrating
Christmas at CPU
By JUANITO M. ACANTO, Ph.D.

Emmanuel! The advent of God to man by His son, Jesus Christ has been bannered by Central Philippine University throughout her 102 years of existence. Founded by American Baptist missionaries in 1905, CPU is breathing actively the very dictum of faith

(fides) and knowledge (scientia) on which she was founded.

On December 6, CPU once again welcomed everyone to her campus for the Festival of Lights and Music at Central. It has been a tradition that in celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, CPU indeed makes Christmas more joyful and meaningful to reflect on God’s amazing love in her display of Christmas lights, festive music, good food and fellowship. Thus, you are all invited to visit us and watch nightly Christmas events inside the CPU campus.
Celebrating Christmas at Central Philippine University is both heroic and historic. It is heroic, because we confess with full surrender and humility the Lordship of Jesus Christ, whose birth commenced the redemption plan of the Almighty God. His suffering and death on the cross for our sin is one sacrifice that brought restoration to our relationship with God. His once and for all heroic act for mankind is the very reason of our being and we must celebrate Christmas.

Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ at Central Philippine University is historic because we recall and revere the many blessings that we have received throughout the years. Jesus Christ has given CPU so much. As 2007 ends and CPU embarks into the vigor and opportunities of the New Year 2008, we will never forget all that God has provided. Though it is humanly impossible to count and name the Lord’s blessings one by one, below are some of them:

In 2007, we were able to weather complex challenges, achieve bigger accomplishment s, and implement organizational changes. CPU remains to be the biggest University in Iloilo City in terms of enrolment. She continues to be ISO 9001:2000 (Quality Management System) certified. This month, we received the CHED memorandum renewing CPU’s full autonomous status.

The relentless efforts of our deans and unit heads to meet the challenges of quality education and accreditation are commendable. The commitment of our faculty and staff to CPU’s vision of EXCEL (Exemplary Christian Education for Life) helps in raising and placing CPU where she is now. We will continue to surge, step by step we climb, aiming and achieving high ever attempting to reach the pinnacle of academic excellence. This is all for Jesus Christ and for God’s greatest glory!

All of the heavenly host rejoice for the thousand students who received the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord during the semestral Christ Emphasis Week (CEW). An offshoot of CEW, we held baptism in mass among Elementary pupils twice this year.

What a joy to see the CPU Covered Gym teem with people this year, during the TESDA Convention, March 2007 Commencement Exercises and the Gary V concert even if it has not been finished completely yet. Presently, we are on Phase IV construction, which is the completion of the CPU Covered Gym.

Soon CPU will become a haven of healthy and fit people when the Lifestyle and Fitness Center operates in the third quarter of 2008. Through the support and sponsorship of Dr. Noel D. Nequin, the brain behind the Bachelor of Science in Health, Fitness and Lifestyle Management Course, CPU started constructing the Lifestyle and Fitness Center in November 2007.

CPU beyond 2007
Approved by the Board of Trustees in their December 1 meeting, CPU is adopting “School of Hospitality Management and Tourism” as the new name for Institute of HRM and Tourism. Furthermore, CPU is naming it as “Lucio C. Tan School of Hospitality Management and Tourism” in honor of a Centralian, Dr. Lucio C. Tan. We are aiming for world-class graduates of the Lucio C. Tan School of Hospitality Management and Tourism; therefore, CPU is planning to put up the latest state-of-the-art facilities and equipment and providing avenues for national and international exposures.

Anticipating the influx of students from neighboring provinces and other regions of the country and foreign students, CPU is preparing to build the proposed four-story residence hall in 2008. The residence hall will house 540 students and will be equipped with modern amenities needed for studying.

Pioneering the offering of BS in Packaging Engineering opens a wide door of opportunities for CPU. After the successful holding of the 1st National Conference in Transport Packaging on 13-14 November 2007, the packaging industry here and abroad are giving attention to the development of the course. CPU will establish a packaging technology and testing center that will cater to the packaging needs of small and medium entrepreneurs, while training packaging engineering students.

On 29 June to 3 July 2008, Centralians will gather for the 2008 Global Grand Reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada. The CPU Federation of Overseas Alumni Associations under the leadership of President Perla G. Londres, is spearheading this event. We are expecting 600 or more Centralians to attend the 2008 Global Grand Reunion.

Indeed, 2007 is a very fruitful and memorable year for Central Philippine University. With blessings overflowing and positive possibilities awaiting CPU, we will continue to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with great fervor. Merry Christmas everyone and glory to God in the highest!

As we journey step by step through the days of this year and continue to perform the tasks He has entrusted us, we draw our strength from the unfailing love of our Lord Jesus Christ who has promised that He will never leave us nor forsake us. The year that was had brought many challenges to our beloved Central Philippine University – challenges that have made us wiser; strengthened our relationship with one another and proved the goodness and faithfulness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

As we face the new year, let me gladly share with you, beloved alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends, the things that we look forward to.

Approved by the Board of Trustees in their December 1 meeting, CPU is adopting “School of Hospitality Management and Tourism” as the new name for the Institute of HRM and Tourism. Furthermore, CPU is naming it as “Lucio C. Tan School of Hospitality Management and Tourism” in honor of a Centralian, Dr. Lucio C. Tan. We are aiming for world-class graduates of the Lucio C. The CPU Federation of Overseas Alumni Associations under the leadership of President Perla G. Londres is spearheading this event. We are expecting 600 or more Centralians to attend the 2008 Global Grand Reunion. This global gathering would be a time of refreshing for Centralians.

As we continue enjoying the Autonomous Status granted to us by CHED, we will also open next school year 2008-2009, the Extended Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEAP) and offer 13 academic programs. The University’s Review and Continuing Education Center has started operations and has various seminars on different subjects for year 2008. CPU, through the College of Computer Studies, is also an accredited CISCO Networking Local Academy (Version 3.0 AP) since the Second Semester 2006-2007.

With blessings overflowing and positive possibilities awaiting CPU, we will continue to celebrate Christ’s greatness in Central Philippine University. A bountiful 2008 to everyone!

January 22, 2008

Dear Centralians and Friends,

Greetings from the campus!

We are very much happy to inform everyone that Dr. Noel D. Nequin was unanimously voted by the Awards Committee as an awardee at the First International BRAINS Awards presented by the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Chicago. The Awards Gala Celebration will be held on January 26, 2008 at the Harold Washington Library Winter Garden, Chicago. BRAINS stands for Business Recognizing Achievements and INitiativeS, to celebrate established and emerging achievers and entrepreneurs.

It can be remembered that Dr. Nequin is an accomplished physician with numerous honors and awards to his name. Among others, he was recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation in 1998, and was named as "One of America's 50 Most Positive Physicians." Because of his numerous achievements and commitment to the health of Chicago citizens, he was also accorded the honor of having the North Francisco Avenue (between West Lawrence and West Foster Avenues) in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. named as the "Dr. Noel D. Nequin Drive" last June 11, 2002. Dr. Nequin is the second Filipino-American to be recognized with a street sign in Illinois and the Midwest.

Dr. Nequin played a vital role in the offering of a new academic degree leading to a Bachelor of Science in Health, Fitness and Lifestyle Management, the first of its kind in the Philippines. The construction of the CPU Lifestyle Learning Center is still undergoing. The Center is at the back of the Henry Luce Library and beside the swimming pool.

We are also glad to let you know that CPU received an amount of $10,000.00 (P440,000.00) from Hudson Valley Hospital Center (HVHC). Mr. John Federspiel, CEO of this Hospital Center, sent the check through Mr. Bill Geis, Jr. and his Centralian wife, Mrs. Glenda Rivera Geis who works as a nurse in the Hospital Center.

Our beloved President, Dr. Juanito M. Acanto, is presently having preliminary talks with CEO Mr. John Federspiel on a possible partnership endeavor of CPU and Hudson Valley Hospital Center. Dr. Acanto is also waiting the permission of Mr. Federspiel that the amount donated will be put in an endowment fund in the name of HVHC and for a scholarship in the College of Nursing, thus, their institution will be with CPU in perpetuity.

The Hudson Valley Hospital Center was named by Press Ganey as their 2006 Success Stories Award and winner in the 2007 Forbes Enterprise Award. The HVHC has a "no-wait" ER policy that revolutionizes the process patients are accustomed to. By moving the registration function to the bedside and creating more triage and treatment space, patients bypass the usual registration function and move through the system quickly.

We hope and pray that the proposed partnership with Hudson Valley Hospital Center will materialize and bear more fruit for the glory of God and service to humanity.

We are grateful also to the family of Dr. Lejo Catedral Braña and Mrs. Concordia Braña who sent an amount of $2, 000.00 for the CPU Packaging Education Program Endowment Fund. This is the third installment of a 5-year pledge. The family also sent another $2,000.00 for the Salvador and Rosalia Braña CPU Outreach Fund, and another $1, 000.00 for the Salvador and Rosalia Braña General Scholarship Fund.

Dr. Braña is our 1997 Distinguished Centralian Awardee for Packaging Engineering. Last March 28, 2004, CPU conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Science (Packaging Technology), honoris causa. He has  distinguished himself as the first Filipino Certified Professional in Packaging and the first Filipino and Asian to receive the most prestigious award in the packaging community in the US and worldwide in his election to the Packaging Hall of Fame. He also played a crucial role in the establishment of the Packaging Engineering course in our university, a first of its kind in the Philippines.

Thank you very much Dr. and Mrs. Lejo Catedral Braña for your generosity!

We are very much thankful also for the College of Nursing Class 1977. Just yesterday Dr. Juanito M. Acanto received an amount of $15, 000.00 brought by Mr. Narciso "Loy" Seisa, the husband of Mrs. Ann Catedrilla -Seisa. This amount completes the $20,000.00 pledge of the Nursing Class 1977 to be used for the Nursing Skills Laboratory. The other $5,000.00 was given by Mr. Bill Geis, Jr., the husband of Nursing Class 1977 Mrs. Glenda Rivera-Geis.

Last January 9, 2008, we also witnessed the generosity of the family of Mr. Augusto U. de la Cruz and Mrs. Independencia Braña de la Cruz when they formally turned-over to our library the many boxes of books that will benefit the College of Nursing, College of Theology and Elementary Department. During the Dedication Program, Director Victory G. Dionio of the University Libraries informed us that the de la Cruz family started donating books last 1999. She also approximately valued all the donated books to P1.5 million.

Mr. Augusto de la Cruz is our former faculty of the High School Dept. and later at Health & Physical Education Department. He also served as the Manager of Franklin Hall, the building in which he worked as a work student janitor for 11 years while studying his Bachelor of Arts, major in Economics and Bachelor of Science in Education, major in Economics. He also has a gift in photography in which he used in the campus a long time ago to augment his income. Now, he takes photos as a hobby and sends it to CPU for publication. Mrs. Independencia Braña de la Cruz finished her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1962. After graduation, she placed third in the National Nursing Board Exam. She then went to the U.S. as an exchange visitor nurse in 1963-65. She also completed her Master of Science in Nursing at Texas Womens' University in 1975 and worked in various capacities as staff nurse, nurse manager and nurse educator at The Methodist Hospital for over 40 years. For the past several years she is a member of the Department of Nursing Faculty at Houston Community College.

The de la Cruz couple is blessed to have three children: Pastor Kim Lair, Rosalie Dee and Auden Dee. Pastor Kim is now working at CPU as Assistant to the President for Sports and Athletics. Rosalie, on the other hand, is teaching elementary students at Rice School in Houston. Auden, the youngest who graduated in Golden Gate Seminary, served as missionary in China for some time, and is now back in San Francisco helping a Filipino church.

Their family is a model family that excels in serving God and the community. To God be the glory for the de la Cruz family!

Our university is also a beneficiary of the generosity of the Thornton Family. Don Thornton wrote our beloved president that the amount of $5, 500.00 was forwarded through the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. The amount of $5,000.00 is for the establishment of the Thornton Scholarship Fund for our College of Medicine. The Scholarship Fund is in memory of Everett and Verdelle Thornton who were American Baptist missionaries in the 1920s along with their two sons Lowell and Edward who were both born at the Iloilo Mission Hospital. Lowell was the father of Don. Don also wrote that additional donations will be coming in the future from their family members through either estate gifts or annual contributions. Don added that the annual award for the Thornton Scholarship Fund be given to our student Geraldine "Eden" Lumactod for as long as she is a medical student in our university. After she graduates, the award will be given to other qualified medical students. Furthermore, the remaining $500.00 is for the tuition, fees and books of Eden for the current school year. Eden is a member of the CPU Gospel Team.

Don is the VP for Administration and Finance of WorldVenture, a missionary sending organization based in Colorado, USA. Don found it very meaningful to help Eden because he recalled that his father, who was born at the Iloilo Mission Hospital, became a doctor and a pathologist. His grandfather who saw Jaro Industrial School turned to Central Philippine College also served CPU as a member of the Board of Trustees and as Treasurer. Thus, helping a medical student (whose profession would be like that of his father's) from a school that his grandfather help built-up quite connects everything, according to him.

Thank you very much Thornton Family for your unswerving commitment to the mission of Jesus Christ and to Central Philippine University.

We end this letter with a quote from the Commencement Address delivered by Dr. Lejo Braña last March 28, 2004, "I would like to suggest at least six core values that I believe are important to you and me. They are: Faith in God, Integrity, Knowledge, Relationship with God and Fellowmen, Service, and Family. These, I believe are the values that will always be a part of you. These are the ones that will, without question, serve as your foundation as you impact your world positively. But how would you effectively bring these values to significantly influence a universe that is waiting for you? Well…YOU HAVE TO PACKAGE THEM. And how would you package them? You package them in YOU…for YOU are the package of your values. You are the PACKAGE!"

May God continually bless us all!

Sincerely,

Rinand Caipang Escuban
